Heishi beads are a type of jewelry that originated with the Santo Domingo Native Americans in the American Southwest and are considered to be one of the oldest forms of jewelry in North America. The name "heishi" comes from the Eastern Keresan language of the Santo Domingo Indians and translates to "shell bead".
